There is so much confusion around what AirWatch is collecting and what kind of privacy you are losing by having a device enrolled in AirWatch. First and foremost, if you are assigned a corporate device to use, expect it to be watched around the clock, your Internet history and messaging seen and logged.

This is where we see users start to panic. AirWatch is meant to both protect the corporate resources, such as e-mail and documentation while also allowing you, the end user, to access it wherever you are and whenever you want to. However, this is all with a caveat…. How many texts do you send daily? Storage is expensive and I doubt many companies would spend a ton of money just to store your iMessages. One of the biggest misconceptions that I want to clear up is that AirWatch does not have the ability to collect information from the personal messages users send or receive from their devices.

AirWatch cannot collect metadata on these messages, either. Everybody take a nice deep breath and a sigh of relief, altogether now, PHEW! Again, I will stress that if you are in a BYOD environment, the way that AirWatch functions will be much different than how it would function in a corporate owned device environment. Just know that if you have a corporate owned device, you have no assurance of privacy related to anything you do on the device. When your phone is GPS tracked by AirWatch, a company administrator can remotely wipe your device in the event you lose your phone or it is stolen… this is a good thing.

Information like iOS version, and whether or not the device has been jailbroken. Another good thing that the agent allows for is push notifications to your device from the administrator console. Notifications are good if the IT department needs to shut all devices down, or remove certain apps for maintenance, etc. Another thing the AirWatch Agent will allow for is the collection and analysis of telecom data. Telecom data such as data used, wifi statistics and more can be collected in order to avoid any overages note: this is only in corporate owned device situations, not BYOD.

The important thing to remember is that the IT department makes the rules. In this daty and age I believe that is a fair request. For me that statement means, they do not want to capture your pictures, but technically they can. Let me reiterate, if you are working on a corporate owned device, you should assume that everything is being collected and can be collected at any time. I apologize for not making that more clear, perhaps a post on the specifics of the AirWatch Agent and what it is doing in the background would help?

If you have the VMware Tunnel app on your device and you connect to it, then you are on your corporate network at that point and then all traffic is going through AW technically. Good question though, keep them coming. Hey Michael, Thanks for reading.

Does that help? Can you be clearer on the technical distinction between a corporate and BYOD device. If so, what stops your company from setting up your Personal device like a corp device? Or are you just assuming that all companies will install other 3rd party software not AW or any of its related apps to collect that info on a Corp device. This seems disingenuous. This is the answer given to all question about AW access. Is this a reasonable assumption? Depends on the situation, a corporate owned device, yes… they can get whatever they want, not so much because of AW but because they have the right to confiscate the phone at any point.

On top of that, adding features such at the Secure Email Gateway SEG , adds another layer of protection for your corporate email. So, while there is some management of the device with ActiveSync, adding AW to the mix presents you with many more features that really take MDM to the next level.

I have to have airwatch for my company owned phone but I used my Apple ID to set it up airwatch was downloaded on my work phone but is appearing on my personal phone can it access data on my personal phone? And if so can I delete it on my personal phone without deleting it on my work phone.

You can just delete it from your personal phone. You apparently have auto-download setup on that device, so any time you purchase an app with your Apple ID, that device will download it. Hi there. I have no problem with that. So, in short, I sometimes do things over my lunch personal lunch times that I want to keep private for whatever reason… after all, it is my own personal time. My question is this; If I switch my location services off during that hour, can my company see that I have switched my location services under Privacy settings off, and would that be sufficient for privacy during my break time?

On the back end, the administrators set the organization group to be corporate owned or BYOD.

Also I drive all day long and download various podcasts to listen to on the road can they track those? As for your company owned iPad, unless you have downloaded the AW agent and enrolled the iPad into AW, the only way they are tracking anything is if they ask for the device back and audit it.

Your answers around what the company can see with regards to email seems to assume that the company will use an AW mail app and thus your corp email and personal email are nicely separated. In my case, the company uses AW to configure exchange to be used in the native mail app provided by apple. It seems like AW should make this information easily accessible to the device owner…. You are right, with an Apple device, the profile is created and used with the native iOS mail client.

Can a company control how much data an employee is allowed to use? Time of day they are allowed to use data? What sites they can visit? A way to slow data after a certain threshold has been met?

My suggestion to you would be to not put your Apple ID or iCloud data on a corporate owned phone. Does that make sense? Is the airwatch application different on a BYOD device vs. Or is it the same, application but using different settings? If so, where can I verify these settings on my byod android phone? Looking at the instructions for installing airwatch on my phone, it looks like ALL of my data is going to be encrypted.

Hello Charles, Thanks for reading! To the end user there will be no difference on a BYOD device. Corporate owned devices have the capability to device wipe your phone back to factory default settings, BYOD implementations are only capable of a Enterprise wipe which only removes corporate email and corporate resources stored on your device.

Or is there a contractual agreement that is signed by the organization which prevents them from using the Corporate Device config for BYOD devices?
